Easy Guide to Spanish Colors
Spanish colors are adjectives! They behave exactly the same way. You can read all about Spanish adjectives here. Colors in Spanish are gender number sensitive which is why there are 4 ways to say 90% of all Spanish colors!
Colors in Spanish are:
- Masculine
- Feminine
- Singular
- Plural
The colors will ALWAYS match the gender and number of the subject it is describing. Your subject must match up with the Spanish color- just like Spanish Adjectives!
The Subject below dictates the Gender & Number!
The Examples above show the COLOR ROJO. Since Spanish Nouns can be Masculine, Feminine, Singular or Plural, adjectives have to be modified to show this gender number sensitivity. That is why the Color ROJO comes in a 4 pack!

All Spanish colors behave this way! We do have some exceptions & neutral colors but most are sensitive to gender.

Now it’s time to practice! If you are a visual learner, write down a Noun with a color- make sure the color matches the gender number. After doing 100 written examples, then do them out loud. You can record yourself with your smartphone to make sure you are doing them right!
You must always put theory to practice or else your Spanish knowledge becomes dormant knowledge!
After doing this 200x your brain will develop a shortcut and you will become significantly efficient at doing this without thinking about it! This happens with practice- no shortcuts!
Spanish Color Placement:
In Spanish the noun comes first then the adjective-there are a few rare exceptions. COCHE ROJO // CASA BLANCA // PERRO NEGRO etc… This is the typical order you will see most of the time. If it’s a FULL sentence then you will see:
- El coche es rojo.
- La casa es blanca.
- Los perros son negros.
Notice how the subject in this case is the noun that is what is affecting the gender/ number of the Spanish color! The Spanish color is placed after the conjugated verb.
