Gustar verb has been difficult for me to understand. This post helped a lot! I never understood why it was gusta or gustan instead of gusto. Gracias por todo informacion
I’ve been learning Spanish for a while, but I’m still confused about the verb gustar and how it works. I don’t understand why it uses “me” instead of “yo.” In English, we’d say “I like” something, but in Spanish, it’s “me gusta” or “me gustan.” Why is that? Why doesn’t it use “yo” like other verbs do?
Also, I noticed that gustar changes to “gusta” or “gustan” depending on what I’m talking about. Why is it singular and plural like that? Does the verb change based on the object being liked instead of who is doing the liking? It seems the structure is the opposite of how we’d say it in English, and it’s been hard to get my head around.
Help me understand the grammar behind it because I feel like I’m always second-guessing myself when using this verb. Any help would be appreciated.
Oh boy, the Spanish gustar verb! Can we talk about how confusing it is? It’s like the universe decided to throw a curveball into our language-learning journey. I mean, in English, we simply say, “I like tacos,” but in Spanish, it’s like saying, “Tacos are pleasing to me.” Why can’t it just be simple?
Every time I try to use the Spanish gustar verb, I feel like I’m playing a game of linguistic Twister. Right foot on “gustar,” left foot on “me,” and oh look, my brain is twisted in a knot! I’ve spent more time figuring out if I should say “me gusta” or “me gustan” than I have actually enjoying my tacos! It’s hilarious and frustrating at the same time.
Spanish in Atlanta has been a lifesaver! You guys have made the Spanish gustar verb way less scary. I have taken Spaniash lessons with Ms. Dee and its been a game changer for me, I’ve finally started to wrap my head around it. They break it down in ways that actually make sense. I’ve even found myself shouting, “Me gustan los tacos!” in class like a proud taco-loving scholar.
Thanks to Spanish in Atlanta, I no longer feel like I’m fighting the Spanish gustar verb. Sure, I still stumble occasionally, but now it’s more like a friendly little trip than a faceplant. If you’re struggling with this verb too, just know you’re not alone. Keep practicing, laugh at the confusion, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll all be fluent taco lovers in no time!
jajajaja Que bien Sarah! It was a pleasure working with you. The Spanish gustar verb is an impersonal verb. There aren’t many verbs like her in the Spanish language but she has “amigas”! LOL but the other impersonal verbs behave the same way as gustar. There arent that many also so don’t worry and enjoy your tacos Senora S. lol. I am so happy you feel more comfortable with the gustar verb. This verb is one of the critical ones to learn for social situations and getting to know people.
